The Functional Gynecology Section of the University Hospital of Pisa (AOUP) is directed by Prof. Tommaso Simoncini and operates within the Department of the Mother and Child, providing cutting edge medical and surgical services in Obstetrics and Gynecology.
Advanced and mini-invasive surgery of benign and malignant gynecologic diseases are within the main activities of the Section. Specific surgical activities involve the use of robotic and laparoscopic surgery, of traditional open surgery for oncological indications, of vaginal surgery and Day Surgery.
The Functional Gynecology Section provides diagnostic and clinical management for all gynecologic diseases, such as endometriosis, uterine leiomyomas, adnexal diseases,infective disorders of the genital tract, congenital malformati disorders. A relevant activity is the surgical treatment of all the range of gynecologic cancers, including endometrial, cervical, vulvar and ovarian cancer. The treatment modalities are empowered by the use of the highest technological standards available, with a particular attention to the use of mini-invasive and innovative strategies, such as robotic surgery.
The Functional Gynecology Section is also very active in the treatment of functional gynecologic disorders, including hormonal disorders of reproductive age, menstrual cycle disorders, menopausa and ageing-related issues. The diagnostic and clinical activities in this area are integrated with an intense scientific research activity developed in collaboration with the main International Scientific Societies.
The Functional Gynecology Section operates in coordination with the experts of the Pelvic Floor Unit of the AOUP, representing the first Italian center and one of the few in the World that offers a fully integrated range of multimodal diagnostic and therapeutic activities devoted to the management of complex female pelvic floor diseases. The Functional Gynecology Section is the first Italian center to use extensively robotic surgery for the reconstruction of complex and multi-compartmental pelvic floor defects, therefore representing a national reference center for these diseases. The Functional Gynecology Section hosts the first II° Level University Master Course in Multidisciplinary Pelvic Floor Surgery, providing cutting-edge didactic information aimed at the development of advanced skills in this complex area of surgery.
